For some reason, I got hooked on this series. The books aren't amazing. The writing can be a little disjointed at time. But the premise is interesting- an anthropologist who helps the police solve murders and gets tangled up in her own little drama. It was enough to keep me reading the whole series. Each story managed to be unique and I rarely guessed the ending. I liked how she ended the series as well.

My one star seems harsh, but I use it to say that I finished but did not like the book.

I've never heard a bad word about Elly Griffith's writing and so I went into this book with high - perhaps too high? - expectations. It was most likely just personal preference, I prefer more tense and faster paced books, and this was incredibly slow and repetitive. So many pages given to Ruth saying she is fat and comparing herself to other women. So many pages focused on her fancying the many men that swarm around her - even though she is fat. The crime/murder plot was just buried beneath Ruth's fat.

I only finished it because I've only ever seen positive reviews and so I wanted to give it a decent go. I will possibly try the second in the series just to give it a proper attempt, but if it is more of the same then I'm going to stop.

I think I have just found a new mystery series.

The main character was wholly relatable, and the description of the Norfolk marshes had me feeling the salt spray and hearing the birds.

Would highly recommend.

i would genuinely enjoy this book if the main character would stop talking about how fat she thinks she is. what a terrible personality trait for your main character. what a weird choice.

An Elly Griffiths fan. A few fat-shaming style comments that I didn't think we're needed but apart from that I liked the plot and writing style.

I kept waffling back and forth on the rating for this one between 3 and 4, but the ending really got me going, so I went with a four. My main complaint with this one is way too much focus on cliche 'overweight, bland, nerdy woman'. I mean, I lost count of the number of times the MC's weight/size was mentioned, generally in a negative context. It's a pity, because otherwise I think the writing is good and engaging.
