Absolutely loved this. Story of an old cowboy asked to take care of his grandchildren whilst his daughter in law has surgery. When grandchildren run into problems Calvin Sidey takes things into his own hands. Would make a fantastic film.

I picked up this book at a bait and tackle store in a small Minnesota town I had not heard of 8 days ago. The clerk said it was very good and he was right. A simply told story that hums along nicely communicating a lot with a little. This book enjoyed the rarified air of a full bore five star book until the very end. Perhaps I will understand why it had to end with this conclusion upon more reflection. Nonetheless, a very good tome by an author I will want to read again.

I wasn't interested in the first few pages and decided not to push on.

Spoiler
In this true Western, I especially liked:
The title and the ending from Catullus 101 (that play on each other), the theme of loss of a loved one from death or abandonment, its effects on a family, its appearance from those close to it, children and adults, and from neighbors and strangers in a small town.
An image of death as sleep that occurs to three principal characters at a moment of crisis.
A brief suggestion of a literary image of Christ.

If I’m being honest, though I loved this book, it upset me in ways I don’t even know how to understand. if your looking for an emotional (possibly hard) read reach for this one. Though I may not read it again this book is truly a work of art WARNING: read content warnings

Watson is indeed a very talented author. His [b:Let Him Go|17318621|Let Him Go|Larry Watson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1363078555s/17318621.jpg|24671843] was one of my favorites the year it was published so I was super stoked to see he had a new book out. My bottom line with this book is this: the skill of the writing was stellar but I didn't really enjoy the story much. I was fully halfway through before I was invested enough in the characters to commit to finishing. This is not necessarily a book I would recommend, but I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it either.

Listened to on Chapter a Day on WPR http://www.wpr.org/programs/chapter-day

Don't think I would have picked this book up on my own, but I enjoyed the story and listening to it. It surprised me in many of it's heartfelt moments.

The narrative ventured more than required into unnecessary melodrama, wandering into sensational voice echoing trite, worn and cliched phrases. Lyricism done poorly is pandering.
