Coming of age when you’re already a mom.
There were aspects of the story that I liked, and did not. Overall it’s a story about the struggles of motherhood and family at any age in this case it’s a 17-year-old mom to a three-year-old daughter, and she lives with her grandma who raised her after her mom died in childbirth, and her father couldn’t handle that and moved back to the Dominican Republic, the father of the child is barely in the picture and goes to a different high school in that area, and Emoni struggles with that relationship while she navigates her senior year, passion for cooking, and a budding friendship with the new guy at school.
I loved that all of emonis meals evoked a strong memory or emotion for those eating her food because truly good food can do that for people and I thought that was an amazing display of her talent in the kitchen.
