This is Ben Loory's first children's book and I was curious how his normally adult storytelling would translate to that genre. Honestly, it translates perfectly and is still undeniably his unique voice! I so enjoyed Mr. Loory's short story collection, [b:Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day|9669765|Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day|Ben Loory|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1294650719s/9669765.jpg|14557574], and this is basically just another one of his fables, only this time with pictures! The relationship between the baseball player and the walrus is sweet and fun and, although fantasy, is told with surprising realism. The story takes you on an emotional journey as well. You start out amused and happy, then you get sad and anxious, then happy again at the end. The illustrations are peppy and inventive with great colors. My husband and I read the book to our two month old daughter and she was captivated by the colors. I know it's a book we will continue to enjoy as she gets older.
