I liked Verity, but wasn't as crazy about the fact that McGuire made her Kick-Ass UF Barbie. I did however like a lot of the creatures especially the Aeslin mice.
The narrator did a good job with Verity, but sadly made Dominic sound like a spoiled 13 year old boy with a questionable British accent.

a crypto zoologist who would rather danve, a monster Hunter confronting a new reality, and a New York populated by some stranger piddle than your average New Yorker.
Seanan McGuire introduces us to a world where evolution has far many branches than we know and humans only believes they are the only sentient on Earth. she gives us a world where each cryptid plays a part in an ecology we are unaware of. it's part zoological studies and part adventure and a missing part.
the title of the book, as well as each chapter quotes, are given in such a way as to promise a level of levity I didn't see. and while the adventure parts are entertaining, the regular interruption to provide crypto zoological information was disruptive. and the dance aspect to Verity's character felt like it was given too much attention for something used mainly as a back story element.

This cover is just dreadfully embarrassing, and if this had been available in Australia on Kindle I would have bought it purely to avoid carrying this awful cover around. It looks like the worst sort of trashy urban fantasy, and while it's not quite that, it's really not great.
Discount Armageddon is the sort of urban fantasy that has a heroine that makes sarcastic quips all the time, which drives me a bit crazy. I mean, you have apparently been raised to be a hunter of monsters, vigorously trained from a young age, you're risking death, we're inside your head in a first person narrative, and you're quipping. Does nothing affect you emotionally? Oh, apart from that man who hates you and all you stand for and whom you basically fall in lust with at first sight. I guess you probably knew how fast he was going to change his mind about all that stuff.
I'm making this sound much more irritating than it was - I did quite enjoy reading it, it was fun and fast paced and light hearted, but it did suffer from being quite silly, and I couldn't get over some of the sillier things. On the plus side, I like the idea of the world being filled with a vast variety of crazy monsters (cryptids), and I enjoyed the story of Discount Armageddon - but it's probably the weakest book of McGuire's I've read.

Okay, this is another book I probably wouldn't have picked up if it wasn't recommended to me. The cover doesn't totally work for me and I'm not always in love with this author's books.
Yet here we are. I'm finally getting to writing this review, for book 1, and I've already read 4 of the books. I absolutely ADORE this series.
Verity is a firecracker, a good person, and just a magnificent lead to follow. The world is complex and huge and there are so many supernatural beings that it is crazy... but in a good way. All the characters we are in constant contact with are decently fleshed out and there isn't one that I thought badly of. They all have their quirks and it was fun reading about them.
Look, I'm 4 books in, waiting for book 5 to come in at my library, I don't know if I can give a great sense of how much I like this series than that. It is addicting and hard to put down. Also, I laughed throughout the story. This book started my connection with these characters and now I'm totally attached to the Price family.
If you like Urban fantasies that focus more on the fantasy and action, but still have a romance AND will make you laugh, you should pick this book up!

This was an amusing book about a young woman who would rather dance than follow in her in-hiding, cryptozoologist parents' footsteps. She is in NYC to try to make a career out of ballroom dancing when single female cryptids start going missing and a member of the evil Covenant shows up to start a purge of the local cryptids and threatens her family's cover. It had a bit of a slow start but ended strong.

Picked this up to read on the bus, and am having so much fun. I suspect that the author doesn't actually know much about dance, but that is a small quibble in an otherwise fairly fast-paced tale full of interesting critters and funny one-liners. I love Verity Price's family and I especially love her worshipful mice!
This is a fast-paced, wisecracking romp of an urban fantasy with an interesting take on the world's strange creatures, called cryptids, Verity and her family are delightful--I want to read more about them--and I especially appreciated the dash of romance without the angsty love triangle trope. The dragon princess Candy was a hoot. Now I want the next one!

It took me a while to get into this book. The main character was not my favorite, but the world building and side characters are interesting enough that I will continue the series. I really love all the species of cryptids
