Enemies to fuck buddies to lovers

Calliope (Lila) is an exiled elf (Sylvan) princess, Abyssian (Sian) is the demonic king of hell (Pandemonia). They also happen to be fated mates, with Lila being the reincarnation of a past princess who broke Abyssian’s heart. Their kingdoms are at war, so Lila is sent on an espionage mission: use her mate status to seduce Abyssian and get hell’s secrets, so the elves can win the war.

Idk man. There were moments of this that were really sweet, especially as they get to know eachother (well if you ignore the fast burn sex). But then there were also cliched tropes everywhere, which maybe I should’ve expected given the premise is enemies to lovers + fated mates. Lila is a Mary Sue, super hot, super intelligent/wily and able to get out of any situation, horny af, brave to the  point of idiocy with a smart mouth…these days it’s like authors think #strongFMC = hot bitches with fiery tempers. I swear to god if I have to read “my little firecracker” one more time I’M going to explode .

Also whyyy do we need to make so many tongue-in-cheek fairy  tale references?? Are we that unoriginal, Kresley??
  • After getting to hell Lila is given a pomegranate to eat that turns out to be a trick
  • Her name is Calliope, sigh. And how tf do we even get Lila from that anyways
  • the whole thing is very Beauty and the Beast
  • Lila is locked in a tower/dungeon (in only her underwear ofc) and has to complete impossible tasks
  • various Cinderella/glass slipper/pumpkin carriage references at the end for some reason
  • Beast spies on Lila with a magic mirror
  • Beast gets turned back into a hot guy at the end (though thank the gods he can still shift back to Beast form)

The writing is typical, though sometimes veering into Wattpad stupidity
  • Lila’s motto is FIFO: Figure It the Fuck Out. This is said ad nauseam. Could we just leave the cutesy ‘alphahole’ terms in the past with Throne of Glass, please?
  • Lila names her two bff spiders Chip and Dale (??)
  • There’s a Beyoncé reference at the end??? It’s giving #Gaslight, Gatekeep, girlboss baby. UGHH

Basically needed more editing jfc. Less YA writing, more worldbuilding. There are some unique concepts and good moments but gah.

I was aiming for 3 stars but the last 50-100 pages ruined this for me, such a contrived  misunderstanding in the final act that drives them apart. And then everything is tied in a perfect little bow, all mysteries explained, in the last 20 pages out of a 500 page book. Sigh.

For whatever reason, I had a hard time focusing on the story and my mind would wander while listening.  I don’t know if it was a me-problem or a book-problem.  Probably a bit of both.  I ended up listening again at 1.5x speed to help fill in the gaps of what I missed the first time.

This was just kind of boring and same old, same old.  Both main characters are bland and don’t stand out.  The antagonistic dynamic between the hero and heroine is no different than in the other books in the series, except there’s a fairy tale-esque flavor to it.

This book is probably important in the overall arc of the series, since it gives us another character in the Møriør.  I am curious about Orion and suspect he’s being set-up as Nix’s love interest? Which would inevitably lead to the Møriør and the Vertas allied against the Pravus.

One of the sexier IAD’s, though also exasperating as all hell between all the lies and deceit and incorrect assumptions. Bro needs to let the past go. I didn’t really buy that Lila was his past love reincarnated and kind of hated that’s what we settled with. Many Disney references with this one, most esp Beauty & the Beast (duh). Excellent spice and overall fun read.
