Very interesting insight into Haitian traditions/superstitions and family life. Different cultures are so fascinating!

Please don’t read this if you have sexual trauma, because that’s a big theme here.
It wasn’t something I would read for fun or relaxation so much as for perspective. I think it shows the effects of how your childhood shapes you as an adult. It was hard to read at some times because of its themes and I did have to put it down for a while and come back to it.

Hard to say what I think about this book. I like it and I don't like it and I love it and I hate it. Clearly, I'm very conflicted. The subject matter is hard and sad, but the writing is beautiful.

"One time I asked her how it was that I was born with a mother and no father. She told me the story of a little girl who was born out of the petals of roses, water from the stream, and a chunk of the sky. That little girl, she said was me."

"Love is like the rain. It comes in a drizzle sometimes. Then it starts pouring and if you're not careful it will drown you."

3-4 stars.
