You're just smelling for smoke
so you can follow the trail
back to a burning house,
so you can find the boy
who lost everything in the fire
to see if you can save him.

Or else--

find the boy
who lit the fire
in the first place,
to see if you
can change him.”

I remember many years ago watching this ted talk on youtube. Nice to see in physical form, but to tell the truth I love watching the ted talk more. I appreciate reading it though

Ah, I'm pleased I listened to the audiobook. She read this poem when she came to DA.

I am not really a maternal person but I love this poem. It ingrains in you the love a mother has for her daughter.
My mom says you can’t understand the love a mom has for her children until you have children on your own, but this poem gives you all the feelings you need to understand the gut wrenching love mothers have.
I love how Sarah performed this poem in her TED talk, and i recommend listening to that before reading the poem because she just says it how it’s meant to be read and it makes ALL the difference.

I first heard this poem about 7 years ago as spoken word on a TED talk by Sarah Kay. I don't know if I would have liked the poem as much if I simply read it first. I will say this is one of my favorite poems and is one of the only things that comforts me if I'm ever feeling down. I highly recommend the spoken word, though!

I love this poem, I will always be a fan of this poem and reading it illustrated was just YET ANOTHER wonderful way to experience it.

I love this book almost as much as I love Kay's original performance of this poem in her TED Talk - which is a lot, it makes me cry every time. This emanation of the poem is simpler, but so heartbreakingly beautiful. What an incredible writer. A must-read and must-watch for parents (especially mothers), educators, and anyone who has a little girl to inspire.
