I liked the pacing of this. It felt like what I imagine an investigation must be like: a lot of spinning your wheels sandwiched by everything happening all at once. That was the extent of what I enjoyed unfortunately. I don’t know what the LA Times thought was “exquisite”. Maybe the subject matter didn’t age well.

kudos to mankell for creating the palpable cold dread that comes with scandinavian literature, it was on point. beyond that, the book was boring and the resolution underwhelming. it was fine, as it fell more like a slice of life than a thriller, and life is often underwhelming. i could complain about the racist undertones, but i'd rather talk about the diarrhea and the martyr complex kurt has. he's got both of those.
