I picked this Olivia title up for an unexpected storytime, and it was quite cute. There are definitely more words on a page than some other Olivia titles. And there seemed to be more jokes for adults/parents than for the kids. It didn't work super well as a daycare book for the location that I visited, but it may work well for one on one.
For: fans of Olivia.

Very very funny. It had Jeff laughing so hard he couldn't breath. BUT the humor is a little beyond Lucas, so not quite as kid happy as the other Olivias. Lord love'er, tho, she's a darn funny pig.

To my knowledge, this is the first Olivia book I have read. I have heard of them and worked with a kid who enjoyed the show, so when I saw this in the Little Free Lending Library, I figured I'd give it a try.
I didn't really know what to expect, but it definitely wasn't this. While parts of the book were humorous, the story itself felt very disjointed. It starts out with Olivia making a band, but then she abandons the idea halfway through. While this is pretty typical of children (and many adults, for that matter), it made for kind of a weird book. The title seemed misleading. It's more like Olivia Form a Band and Then Does a Bunch of Other Random Stuff.
Also, I can't lie, I was kind of creeped out by the mash-up illustrations. The insertion of photographs looked weird (and those freaking teeth in the lipstick scene are going to give me nightmares, thanks, Falconer!).
I will say, I did appreciate how extensive the "noises" were in the text (PING, THUD, KINNK, POINNNGG). That took some creativity.
Overall, this book didn't really live up to the hype for me. It was an okay read.

January 2017 - I love the deadpan humor, and Ben thinks it's pretty funny, too (plus fireworks).
November 2018 - I forgot that we'd read this one together - Ben thought it was absolutely hilarious.

Had I known this was actually a 4th of July book I would have read it for our 4th of July story time instead of for the Alphabet Series "Letter O". But I'll know better for next year I guess. This one definitely made me giggle, and I hope the kids enjoy it too.

I guess I don't get Olivia. This was basically parts of 3 disparate books pasted together, none of which were particularly good. Keep it.

Talk about disjointed...lots of revolvers picked up and not used (figuratively speaking) and lots of loose ends left that way. Just...is it so hard to write a fun *and* cohesive pig-centric kids' book? I'm just askin'.
