Bof.

A kind of interesting book, but not thematically compelling enough to warrant the transgressive elements that it plays with. I would have preferred more substance, but rather got highly stylized retellings of the narrator's necrophilia. The only nods towards a drive in the narrator's necrophilia is his mother's passing, which I found cliche and unsubtle, and his desire for a purely negative and purely pleasurable partner. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book was his brief recognitions of the ephemerality of his position, but these moments were far and few. Such as that, if you want a highly stylized account of necrophilia, but are not interested in any thought-provoking questions, this book is for you.

i have no idea how to summarize the plot here without it sounding disgusting, because it is disgusting. a man called lucien robs graves and then does things with the corpses, but you can probably figure out what he does just based on the title. the story is narrated by him, sort of like a diary.
the writing style was really good. i would adore it if the author wasn't writing about something this disgusting. lucien, as a character, is interesting because of his psyche and the things he does.
i appreciate the quality of the writing here, and i understand that it's meant to be bizarre, uncomfortable, and grotesque. i just can't say i enjoy it or find much personal meaning in it. i definitely wouldn't have finished it if it was any longer. i just kept saying you can do it san, it's under 100 pages, you can read it. and i did! but i will never read this again. once again though, really high quality writing.
