The book summary was misleading. This was about the history of classical (symphony, opera) not about music as a whole. The author seemed to have a disdain for any other form of music. Almost no mention of folk, jazz, blues, etc. Even felt like he thought things went downhill when the ability to record music and have it widely shared occurred. I thought this book had a lot of academic snobbery to it. Much of the technical music aspects was over my head, but no doubt the author knew his stuff. This is probably used best as a textbook for a particular music history class in classic music.
