Colonization rebellion part 2. Not bad but felt a bit thin. Not enough struggle, not enough character depth, not enough believable aliens. Readable but not thrilling.

The continuing saga of displaced human (and other races) on the planet Botany. Emassi try to take Zainal back to serve his chosen Eosi role - which leads to the colonists stealing a scout ship after a kidnap team is eaten by night crawlers - and then commandeering not one, but two transport ships. The mysterious mech makers / Farmers visit, encasing the planet in a Bubble shield that prevents further Catteni/Eosi incursions.

Finally, a daring mission by colonists to Barevi to acquisition supplies becomes a rescue mission and hijacking.

This series is just fascinating.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Abducted by the alien Catteni, Kristin Bjornsen was one of many humans brought to the planet Botany as part of an experiment to see if it could support life. Enslaved and forced to colonize a world not their own, the settlers have accepted Botany as their home—a home worth fighting for…

Kristin’s people have learned that the aliens responsible for their imprisonment are merely mercenaries, subjugated by the parasitic Eosi Race, and that Botany is being farmed remotely by some unknown species—a species that may be sympathetic to the colonists’ struggle for freedom.

Anne McCaffrey is one of my all time favorite authors and was one of the first fantasy authors I ever read. Her books can come across as a bit dated now but on the whole I quite enjoy them. Her world building is wonderful and I always find her characters engaging. The Catteni series is one of my favorites by her.

Don't be fooled by the tidy chapters amd polite reading level. McCaffrey handles some weighty philosophy. This would be a five star book except for: the insertion of a heternormative breeding imperative, and retreating from having the main female protagonist conscientiously object. Also, sex that is only consensual by dint of extreme intoxication is plot-waved away.
If those points are not dealbreakers, you will enjoy this otherwise high-concept bit of speculative sci-fi.

Female protagonist science fiction. World making a little flat.
