Beautifully written. Very sad in places. Makes you think about the importance of family. Love the food descriptions.

I didn’t like this book right away, it had to grow on me. To be honest the first 50% was too ‘telling’ for my taste. But from the moment Michelle’s mom dies, everything changes. The realness kicks in, as do the razor sharp observations.

This memoir is about what happens when your ‘person’ is gone. What then? What’s next? This quote for example, will be very relatable if you lost someone:

“All these objects seemed orphaned by her loss, or just devolved into objects, matter, impedimenta. What once had a purpose transformed into a blockade. The bowls once reserved for their own specific meals were now just dishes to be sorted, obstacles in my path to leave. The candleholder I used to pretend was a magical urn as a child, a key plot point in my imaginary narratives, now just another thing to throw away.”

This was a roller coaster of emotions, but a beautiful tribute to the author's relationship with her mother. It had me sobbing at times, and craving my favorite Korean foods at others. I truly loved this memoir, but it was difficult to get through when my emotions ran too high. I would recommend this to all, but make sure you monitor your mental health especially when it comes to the death of a parent.
