After the Heartland War, abortion is illegal; instead, parents can choose to have their children between the ages of 13 and 18 unwound, a process by which their body parts are donated for medical use. Three teens escape their scheduled unwinding, and their fates intertwine throughout the story as they try to stay hidden and alive until their 18th birthdays, when they’ll no longer be able to be unwound. [return]While the premise of the story is a bit far-fetched, the us-against-the-world theme will resonate with teens. The pace of the story is quick and the plot gives readers much to think about regarding when life begins and when it ends. Recommended for mature YAs due to a scene of a bloodless yet horrifying unwinding being performed.

Did not like the world-building or the characters.
