I love the idea of hippos in America so much... Great cast of characters and fun book to read.

It's a toss up whether I like this one more than the first. They complete each other so well. I love that we were given so much resolution for our beloved characters. Just as inventive as I have come to expect from Gailey.

Plotting was a bit weaker here, I didn't really buy the obsessive-level relationship stuff. I was also personally distracted by the mastitis situation, but also want to give the story points for something that is rarely included.

I still love these characters, and I adore their trouble, but I also feel like the first book was better. I had one specific complaint:
SpoilerHoundstooth's grief seems a little bit too extra but I guess it gives Archie the opportunity to be extra divine?. Still, if you enjoyed the first book, you will absolutely enjoy this one.

This is the sequel to [b:River of Teeth|31445891|River of Teeth (River of Teeth, #1)|Sarah Gailey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1484234556s/31445891.jpg|52146842], and I would only recommend it if you really connected with the characters & found them immensely compelling. I was more intrigued by the idea of the US government introducing hippos as a livestock resource.

The characters had their own dramas to deal with (and were annoying) against the very faint background of the 'feral' hippos that had been released at the end of the first book. Other than being a method of transportation...they were used instead of horses....hippos were simply a boogeyman that Gailey could pull out whenever she needed to drive her characters quickly through the plot.

And while I appreciate her inclusion of a character that prefers to be pronoun-neutral & is referred to as 'they', it made for very confusing reading. I had to re-read multiple passages just to realize that all of the 'they' and 'their' referred to one person, and not the two people that were traveling together.

Read the first book in this series for a bit of fun, but skip this one.

Taste of Marrow and its precursor, River of Teeth, are like cupcakes of literature. They are pulpy like the best pieces of fanfiction are--they are fluffy, very queer, based off absurd and incredibly satisfying tropes, and have a diverse cast of devilish conmen, assassins, and rogues. Being quick, fun reads, I highly recommend both of them.
