This is one of the best books I've ever read. It is filled with a wealth of information, giving flesh and voice to a condemned woman while also illuminating the buried history of slavery in Canada, and bringing old Montréal to life. I highly recommend it!

Monumentally important history for Canadians. Extraordinarily well-researched and compassionate history-telling, especially in light of the attachment most Canadian-born folks have to the idea that we were the safe haven into which the Underground Railroad liberated the enslaved--which is borne straight out of the subject matter of this book never being taught or spoken about in public schools.

So much of this book is about the entire comprehensive history of the atrocity and genocide that is the trans-Atlantic slave trade, all the way from the beginning of its development by the Portuguese in the early 1400s, until the lifetime of Marie-Joseph Angelique herself. Will definitely be re-reading, and will never stop recommending this book as long as I breathe.
