This was a great comeback after the disappointment of The Reluctant Countess.
In the final grovel his reply that his wife smells like cat piss did not inspire me to like him.

Delightful! I really like Eloisa James, and it was so fun to return to regency romances after reading so many contemporaries. I think Stella and Silvester have terrific chemistry, but I really wish we had seen more of his romantic growth on-page. Silvester made some fairly questionable decisions, and I wish we could’ve seen more moments where his real thoughts and emotions became clear.
This book leans quite a book on the events of the previous story (which I haven’t read), which was less confusing and more frustrating to watch an earlier villain wreck havoc on the love lives of another set of characters. The epilogue helped smooth over some of my annoyances, especially in the third act.
All in all, I had a great time! Eloisa James has such a deft hand with historical details, and who doesn’t love a bespeckled bluestocking protagonist?
ARC provided by Edelweiss and Avon. All thoughts are my own.
