So... I basically hated almost all the new characters. I didn't mind Miss Lavender too much (even though she isn't introduced until well after the mid point of the book) but most everyone else was annoying as hell.
I was ever so disappointed that Davy and Dora's uncle died. Not because I was particularly attached to the character that was oft spoken of but never materialized (resisting an incredibly strong urge to insert a Gadot reference here) but because it meant that the twins were now permanent fixtures to the series. Damn. I hated Davy the little sociopath and his much neglected and terrorized twin sister, Dora. I assume by the end of the series Davy will realize his true potential as a serial killer and Dora will go off to explore (haha, that was unintended) other lands where the people appreciate a steady and reliable personality and don't heap praises onto abuse and call it 'mischief'.
I hated the much lauded Paul Irving, whom I found beyond creepy and every time he referenced his "little mother" I wanted to scream that no child would ever call their own mother 'little' unless they were an actual teeny tiny Thumbelina of a woman! Also, the fact that he (and all the other children) only refer to Anne as 'teacher' instead of 'Miss Shirley', which would be more natural. That and the weird way that Paul continuously calls her 'my beautiful teacher' in the creepiest way.
I don't understand the point of Mr Harrison and his stupid bird. He doesn't further the story in any way. Not that there was much of a plot to further. This book read more of a series of vignettes that (sometimes vaguely) involve Anne. It's almost like, at the end of the first book, Anne was forced to stay in town and this book is our punishment. It was, most likely, filler for the series as a whole since the only purpose it served was to introduce new characters in the most inorganically way possible so LMM doesn't have to waste precious time doing it in the future installments.
On top of this, Anne and the other main characters don't develop any. Or have a plot. The only character with a story in this book is Miss Lavender, a secondary character we don't meet until after the halfway mark.
Another issue I had was the conversational "ticks" of the characters. Instead of adding character it just annoyed me.
Overall I was seriously disappointed in this installment. It was not just filler but over-saccharine drivel. I kind of wish I would have skipped over this novel and gone right to book 3, which I hear has an actual plot. And Gilbert is actually IN the story.

Anne's story continues as the school teacher in Avonlea. She and Marilla take in twin six year old relatives, and Anne makes new friends with some of the folks in town.

The beginning and middle of the book were only three stars for me. I got tired of Anne and Paul's fanciful imaginations and of Davy's antics. However, the last few chapters were splendid, containing just a hint of the romance I remember loving on my previous reading of the series, bringing my rating up to four stars.

4. Super sweet. I liked this one better than the first. Anne is much less annoying in this one.

I used to think of this book as just killing time between Green Gables and the Island (I love the college years!), but this time I found it had its own charm. Mostly I just remembered Anne finally breaking and whipping the Pye boy. Still a sucker for Gilbert starting to fall in love with Anne.

I switched back and forth between the audiobook and the ebook. I freaking love these books.
I'm rooting for Gilbert and Anne!

This series is so whimsical and fun to read. There’s definitely quite a little plot and more focus on characters which normally I don’t like but this was great.

This book focuses on Anne starting her first few years as a teacher and helping Matilda raise two young cousins, Davy and Dora. Overall some great mishaps were had and wonderful characters were introduced.

While not as entirely charming as Anne of Green Gables, I enjoyed Anne of Avonlea very much. There were a few moments that I found my attention wavering, and a few saccharine situations that I had to gloss over, but all-in-all it was a pleasant read.
