Great setting with many characters. It's not quite as atmospheric as some of her other novels because there's so much bustling to and fro but I do appreciate a stand alone novel without our famous detectives.

Agatha Christie never fails to please in this mystery Inspector Narracotts investigations are augmented by a journalist, the main suspect's fiancee and a local with an interest in criminology.
Of course the real culprit is found in the end.

A séance held in a remote country house during a snow storm correctly predicts the murder of the absent Captain Trevalyan…

It took me some time to warm up to this one, I think because of the whole predictive séance scenario - having it as a starting point for the story and having so many characters accepting it at face value felt at odds with the unsentimental logic that I expect from Christie. That said, it all made sense in the end (of course) and aside from figuring out the odd piece of the puzzle, I did not guess how it would all come together and I enjoyed the denouement. The wintery, snowy and remote setting is very atmospheric, perfect for anybody in the northern hemisphere currently looking for a seasonal mystery. It was fun to have an intelligent, enthusiastic young lady take on the role of amateur detective, but I didn’t quite gel with her - turns out I prefer the story to be steered by somebody with a little less energy and a little more of a considered plan of approach. A secluded, atmospheric murder mystery, best read in the dark depths of winter, ideally when snowing.

This was a fun read. Little Free Library find. Had the usual Christie twists and turns, but kind of didn't stick the landing.
