An interesting idea for a comic with art I really liked. However, unfortunately it ended up being just overall not that interesting to me.

The Ojja-Wojja is a supernatural mystery about the toxicity of conformity and the hidden violent pasts of many localities in the United States. While the quick pacing and focus on mystery is sure to keep young readers engaged, I wish the book had focused more on characterization. It's rare for autistic and transgender protagonists to exist singularly in comics, let alone as a duo, but the promise of a series gives me hope that we'll get to know these girls more in the future. This first volume is entertaining, gorgeously and expressively illustrated, and definitely worth your time. I look forward to its continuation.

The Ojja Wojja focuses on best friends Lanie and June, who are autistic and trans respectively. Their friendship is the cruz of the novel, and their support and love for each other and their differences is very sweet.

The bully plotline felt a bit juvenile, and the two pages spent humanizing her were unnecessary. Using an antisemitic text during the magic rituals is disappointing in a book that celebrates diversity elsewhere. The story was a bit rushed, too, and needed more development in the ending sequence.

The artwork is expressive and the color work does a great job of setting the tone. I read a digital ARC, but I hope print manages to capture the intensity of the colors.

For MG fans of Goosebumps and Stranger Things.
