Okay this book had me actually scared a few times!! The beginning was a little slow for me and did make me cry due to my own existential crisis about mortality BUT I think that’s a me-problem. I do hate Pupkin and I’m glad he’s not on the cover because I think he’d haunt my dreams. The plot twist was amazing though I had suspected it pretty early on. Still this was amazing, and had me on the edge of my seat.

Okay that's on me for not checking the warnings for a horror novel but like I lost any interest at 41% and then fully had to quit at 69% when
they said puppet hole a second time and this time accompanied by Mark's bloody stump of a hand sticking out of it
. Not even 2.5x speed could save me. I can't do gore, so again, that's on my for not checking. But I fully lost any interest when the plot fell apart into pure slasher horror.

If you’re feeling nostalgic for campy horror, this novel is a great pick. It follows two adult siblings with a strained relationship as they cope with the sudden death of their parents and decide to sell the family home. Unfortunately, the house is haunted.

Cue generational trauma manifesting as haunted puppets and dolls. While I found the book more silly than scary, it still managed to inspire some pretty weird and creepy dreams.

i picked up this book simply because it was set down the road of where i live (thanks to goodreads 1 book from each state list), and i did no further research into it. this rating is completely my fault because i failed to check the genre before reading. i’ve never read a book with any psychological or thrilling elements, so when murderous entities sprung up it took me much by surprise—the kind of surprise you don’t want when reading a book

i gave it 3 stars cus there isn’t anything particularly wrong with it, a good exercise in suspension of disbelief if anything. it’s just not for me. i can see why someone would like, though

Very good book :) Really enjoyed it , a lot of books like these can tend to have a very information / backstory heavy first half which this did not. The siblings , Louise and Mark , are both very complex and unlikeable in their own ways and between them and the extended family there’s a lot of wanting to hate one side or the other and being unable to which I enjoyed. I don’t normally reach for haunted stories but this one was fantastic and made sense all the way through , nothing felt like an aside or written in without intention so everything was a clue which was very satisfying. A very satisfying ending too, one that didn’t feel overly dramatic or out of line with the rest of the haunting. Probably my favourite haunted book :)
