I had really high hopes for this book. I originally picked it up because my despite my knowledge of this period of American literature, I had never heard of Margaret Fuller. But  after finishing this book, I still feel like I don’t know her. The Margret in this book is a Mary Sue - she’s the prettiest, smartest, everyone loves her and she has a witty response to the people who don’t (but don’t worry, they come around ).

Despite being so long (and slow) the book doesn’t really touch on all the things she accomplishes. Instead, it centers around her relationships with men - Emerson, Hawthorne, Greeley, her husband. 

On a personal note, I thought the constant mention of water and fear of drowning to be overdone.
