Ok here’s the thing two things can be true at once; Alice is a victim whose life was drastically impacted by a violent rape and her/the actions of those around her following this rape turned someone else into a victim. Does this make this book any less impactful? I’d argue no, it actually makes it more impactful because it reveals where systems can fail. I’ve been seeing a lot of reviews calling for Alice to be crucified as if she wasn’t an 18 year old when this assault occurred and she wasn’t pressured by the system and her family into acting a certain way. Overall I’m giving this book a very neutral rating because I still believe in the message but not with the outcome

Still haunted by her story, years after reading.

This book is a tough read but one that all women and men should. It tells the true story of Alice Sebold's (the author)rape while away at college. The story then follows her as she tries to put her life back together. Also covered is the prosecution of her rapist and later, the rape of her best friend.
The story is graphic-especially the description of the rape. But if you can get past that, its a story of courage and justice and a life changed forever.

It's almost unfair to give your opinion on someone else's life. Sebold is a very talented writer and I hope writing this memoir gave her some sense of catharsis.

TRIGGER WARNING to any people who may be somewhat affected by the topics discussed in this novel. That being said, "Lucky" is an incredibly strong and poised account by Alice Sebold. I would reread this any day. Perfection.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it had me completely riveted. The first few pages I was afraid it would be a chore to get through but my fears were allayed as the book quickly progressed. l think it's an important book and would happily recommend this although perhaps not a book for everyone's taste due to the graphic nature depicted. I thought it incredibly brave for Alice to share her story with us, it almost read as a straight novel at times it was hard to comprehend that this was not fiction. A book I will ponder for some time as it left a strong impression on me. Even though this book dealt with such a serious subject I never felt like it was ever too heavy or hard going, a testament to the author's writing skill

edit on 11/24/21: The overturned conviction that happened after a director for a potential movie based on this memoir started a private investigation has changed my entire outlook on this memoir. Reading about the trial now instead of through nostalgia's lenses — I first read this book as a 13-year-old in the mid-90s — makes me question both the author and myself.
