I was a little disappointed with this, probably because I have such high standards for Ackerman. While I think the book's central thesis — that there is a direct line from War on Terror to Trump's win in the 2016 election — is correct and well explained, the individual chapters feel too segmented, failing to build upon each other in the way I expected.

As someone who was too young to pay attention to news and politics before Trump's rise, this book helped me learn the details of America's response to 9/11 from 2001-2016. But overall, I felt like the book was too condensed and needed way more space for such a massive topic. Otherwise, it was filled with apt criticisms of the war on terror, and a good starting point for those who want to understand how the response to 9/11 directly led to the rise of American fascism.

This is the most complete telling of the failures of the War on Terror and how it has irreparably created a paradigm shift in US politics.

Great read if the subject interests you . I will agree with other reviews that it reads a bit like a Wikipedia page at times with the amount of information given at one time , but I believe it helps the book and the overall story being told . If you are at all curious about the subject of the war in terror I highly suggest this book

A solid interpretation of the war on terror, it isn't perfect, but for something so recent the War on Terror feels unprocessed and yet also like history. But it never ended and the people who made the mistakes were never held to account.
