Compelling and more approachable than I assumed it would be. And differently from a lot of people, I thought the ending/epilogue was beautiful.

I'm sure there was a lot lost in translation, but this edition made a good job of trying to make up for that.

"Your worst sin is that you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing."

🪓

Normalise marrying your crush's sister when you cannot marry your crush because of societal expectations.

My man Razumikhin looked once at Rodi's sister and immediately fell in love.

🪓

But what an experience this book was. It has all of the elements that you will expect from a Dostoevsky book, however, everything is turned up a notch. The bleak, the crazy, the genius, the destitute stand outs stark in this book.

🪓

Both the characters and the place made this book for me. Loved whenever Rodi went on one of his crazy monologues. Probably the best parts of the book. And it being superimposed by the underbelly of St. Petersburg and it's inhabitants was stunning.

Raskolnikov is such a good character, can't believe my man Fyodor had us sympathising with a murderer. Even though there were layers to the murder (some will say), but, it was still a calculated and cruel thing.

But also my man Rodi was on such a high even when he had like pennies in his pocket like he was alive through sheer willpower and goodwill of other people.

🪓

Definitely a must read book, definitely deserve it's position in the 'you must read this book or perish' list. Consider this a sign to push this up on your TBR.
