This was my first book by Kathryn Hughes and hopefully not my last. I don't always gel with story's revolving around two different time lines but this one did work well for me. It was an intrigued plot lime and a bit of an emotional read. Not a new favorite of mine but definitely liked the writing style

I enjoyed reading the authors previous book, The Letter, and couldn't wait to read this one.
The story is one which drew me in and made me want to keep reading so much that I didn't put it down until I had finished. It starts in the present day but then goes back in time to allow the reader to discover the back story in great detail.
The characters were all very well done, I sympathised with so many of them over the choices they had to make and the circumstances they found themselves having to deal with. The story shows that something which you may think is a small detail can become a huge problem as time goes on.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to whatever the author decides to give us next.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm really torn about what I felt about this book. On the one hand I really was emotionally involved in the present day story of Beth and Michael and their little boy Jake who needed a kidney transplant. You could understand their desperation to find a donor and their search to find Beth's father in the hope he might be able to help. On the other hand, I felt the story in the past was a little simplistic. I'm not sure what it was about the characters but I didn't really feel much sympathy for many of them. I thought there were too many coincidences, not entirely believable. While I could understand some of the actions of Michael's Aunt Daisy, I felt that given the circumstances, she would have revealed her secrets earlier. It's not that I didn't enjoy the book. I did, just not as much as I enjoyed The Letter.

When I read the letter, I was not sure whether this author could equal that. However this was just as good, this is one author who I will be following for a long time, hope we see many more great works from her. She is fast becoming one of my favourites, two amazing books so far, this book has everything, happiness, joy, sadness, heartache and was full of emotion. Also, when I thought I had the story figured out, this apprising twist happened. Can't wait to see what this author will come up with next. Rachel Atkins that narrator of the audiobook was well suited for this novel, she is brilliant with accents and portrays in motion very well. I would highly advise people to get the audio copy of this book.
