onerodeahorse's review against another edition

"Time is the only doctor. And it is true. But he is certainly a slow worker that Time, and no anaesthetist at all."
Stevie Smith's first novel suffers from a common problem of novels written by poets: it works on a sentence level, on a language level (there are vivid and brilliant sentences dotted throughout) - but in this case there's not enough of them to make up for the fact that for me, as a *novel*, as a piece of fiction, it just doesn't really work.
