When Amy's boyfriend surprises her with a dream holiday, she thinks he's finally going to pop the Big Question. Instead, she finds herself on the set of a Big Brother style TV reality show called The Shelf. She's just been dumped on live TV in front of millions. Along with several other women, Amy must compete in a series of humiliating tasks in order to be crowned 'The Keeper.'
This was such a fun read and I enjoyed it immensely, although I'm not really sure what the purpose of the show was. Was it trying to force the girls to change themselves into someone appealing to men? Or was it really trying to open the girls' eyes and make them stand up for themselves? I honestly think Dr Hicks had the girls' best interests at heart, but everyone else? Well, all the other guys I could have thumped every time they opened their mouths! I've met a few like them too! Yuk! Good to see that a few of these awful men got their just desserts, particularly Amy's ex-boyfriend, who had the cheek to ask her for money by the end of the book!
All of the girls were wonderful characters and I could have punched the air in triumph every time they stood up for themselves! I'm so pleased everything turned out well for each one of them at the end!
All in all, a good read! Recommended!

Interesting idea but a bit simple, on the nose and clunky.

When I first started reading this book, I had no idea what to expect. I thought I would hate it a quarter of the way through because at times it felt like I was reading about Big Brother. I am the type of person whereby if I stop liking a book midway, I will drop it there and then. I am also the type of person who does not usually leave book reviews but here I am. As well as this, whilst I am also a sucker for reality TV, reading it is not as fun as watching it. However, The Shelf proved me wrong. As you keep reading on, you want to keep on reading. The chapters are short but this is what kept me wanting to carry on reading. The characters are fantastically made up as well as the scenarios. In the end, the message of the story makes you feel empowered as a singleton. Every women has their own timing in doing things. And, it is incredibly difficult to find something when you look for it, we just have to leave it up to fate and kismet! Lovely and easy read.
