I had a fantastic time with this book. Wonderful and compelling illustrations, interesting tangents, an unlikely adventurer, a story within a story, so many parts that worked for me.

I must say there were certain aspects of the story towards the end that didn't work quite as well for me

regarding wormholes and the likes,

and there certainly language and attitutes that haven't aged well (racist and ableist remarks). Overall I really did enjoy the book though.

Une lecture que je ne m'attendais pas à apprécier autant sachant que ce livre traînait dans ma caisse à lire depuis douze ans ! (l'âge du personnage principal, coïncidence ?)
Le jeu avec les notes dans les marges, qui m'avait attirée à l'époque, m'a effectivement beaucoup plu, surtout quand, avec le recul de ne plus avoir moi même 15 ans, je me rends compte que je pense comme T. S., et que je retrouve une jeune moi dans ce personnage...
Cela mis à part, quelques bémols, dans le sens où ce livre est un produit de son temps (milieu des années 2000), et donc pourrait faire mieux sur certains points (traitement des personnages féminins (quoiqu'on n'est pas trop mal, pour l'époque), quasiment que des personnages blancs et heteros, etc.), et des retournements parfois un peu surréalistes (mais qui ont du sens quand on se souvient que le narrateur a douze ans !). 
En y ajoutant un surprenant récit enchâssé, on finit avec une lecture qui m'aura quand même entraînée d'un chapitre à l'autre !

in the last third of the book, T.S. gets injured, and the injury, which stays untreated for some time, bleeds a lot

Racism:

one character is said to spew non-stop racist, pre-MAGA-style nonsense, with some of what he says written in the text. It is however explicitly addressed as wrong

Child death:

Layton, T.S.'s little brother, died in a horrible accident half a year before the story begins. This accident is mentioned several times and described in a relatively detailed manner, as it constitutes a big trauma for T.S. and his family

Misoginy:

There are well-intentioned discussions of misogyny in science and how women are discouraged from pursuing scientific careers, but without really offering any conclusion other than "well then they give up and become mothers"
