I read an adaptation by Robert Brustein for the American Repertory Theatre Series which was even shorter than this one (66 pages). Speaking only for that shorter version, I can confidently say....this is a play written by Henrik Ibsen. There are lines. There are set changes. There are themes. Did any of those lines, themes, or set changes grip me overmuch? No. If I wanted a show about a male visual artist draining his muse and ultimately becoming unmoored from the world around him in service of a grand vision, I'd rewatch Sunday in the Park with George.

Oh, my gracious, was this play an experience to read! I read the William Archer translation, and Archer did a presumably brilliant job! I very much enjoyed this, even if it is a dramatic tragedy.

2.5 stars. I wish I liked this play more than I do because Ibsen’s later prose plays are some of my favorite ever written. But the symbolism here is too heavy-handed, the characters are too stereotypically brooding, and the ending is almost laughable. I only wish Ibsen’s health had lasted for another decade so that he could have made the transition into the next phase of his career.

Poetic and spare evocation of our simultaneous yearning for and dread of the full experience of life; revolves around familiar themes of Ibsen with a sense of both finality and deliberate ambiguity.
