McHugh's most satisfying novel yet. I was quickly drawn into this tale and the pacing keeps things moving at a perfect clip. McHugh could have delved a little deeper into the secondary and tertiary characters, but I liked how she kept the focus mainly on Sarah and the mysteries being unspooled both in the present and her past. Although I guessed several plot details early on, this didn't keep the book from being an entertaining ride that dabbles in some very dark corners and at times made me physically recoil. I feel like my wariness of religious zealots was definitely reaffirmed by the story's events.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this title.

5 years ago, Sarabeth was abducted from her family’s farm and held captive for a week. She was blindfolded the whole time and never saw her abductor. When she got away, no one believed her.

Sarah is now living a few hours away and trying to ignore her past - changing her name and not telling anyone about what happened to her. Until a law enforcement officer convinces her he needs her help - another girl has gone missing and he believes it might be connected.

Told in alternating timelines between Sarah now and Sarabeth before the abduction, this was a compelling read. I could see the ending coming but still was interested to see it all play out. Thank you to Random House for the gifted book.

Probably my 2nd favorite book of hers after The Weight of Blood. Well done characters, interesting mystery. My only complaint is that the ending seemed to tie everything up very neatly and a little fast.

Fascinating! Full of religious nutcases, What's Done in Darkness has plenty of stuff to get up in arms about. Loved the atmosphere.
