After reading and hating the Twilight series I was a little reluctant to read yet-another vampire series. I really enjoyed this book. Although the name of the name character, Sookie, makes me giggle a little (those who know Russian will understand me), I really liked the set of characters and the development of the story.

The author
Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over twenty-five years. A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Now she lives in southern Arkansas with her husband, her three children, three dogs, and a duck. The duck stays outside.

The synopsis
Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out.... Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.

The review
I will not say to much about this book. It is a very entertaining story fitting right on the Harlequin shelf with some vampires. If you really try hard you can make up some double layer meaning behind the story but I think that is more by accident.
Characters are properly described. Looks are obviously very important, more than character . There are various holes and flaws in details of the story. I will not be able to read all these books in one go. But they are entertaining enough to pick one up to fill up a hole or after some heavy books if I do not want to think to much about what I read.

Book #4 in the RYOB challenge. I received this book as pat of the Love Bites Vampire Valentine swap on Ravelry.

The book is a light, trashy read. Sookie can be very stupid and annoying, but it was fun for what it is. I'll probably read other book in the series.

Sookie Stackhouse has a gift. One she hates and makes everybody think she’s crazy. She can hear into people’s heads. When she meets Bill it’s with utter happiness that she finds herself unable to read his thoughts.

Bill is a vampire who is trying to mainstream. He’s moving into his old family home and trying to fit into the town of Bon Temps. He falls for Sookie pretty quickly after he meets her.

The little town of Bon Temps has a murderer lurking at night. Women are being murdered, but not just any women, women who like to date Vampires. Women who’ve been bitten. This murderer is strangling them and worse. Sookie finds herself to be a target of this after meeting Bill. When the murderer finds her its a fight for her life while she has to see in his head all the other murders he’s committed.

You’ll also find yourself entranced by a powerful vampire, named Eric, a shifter friend, some fabulous supporting characters, and a lot of fun. This book is well done and lots of fun to read.

A captivating read! So much creativity wrapped into one story. Murder, romance, wit, and well developed characters all wrapped into one book. Now, on to the next!

3.5 stars. I enjoyed it enough to want to continue the series but the way the characters talk annoys me a little. But I am intruigued and looking forward to reading the next book.

The mystery part was good but the communication between characters was sometimes written so bizarrely I couldn’t finish a chapter and went back to reading a day later. I almost DNF’d it but pushed through towards the end. I’ve heard wonderful things about Trueblood and wanted to read the books first but I may just go to the show because I don’t think I can read another one.

I have to admit I started the Sookie series knowing I’d love it after watching some of the tv series! I was slightly worried about how different they would be but I’m presently surprised so far!

Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. The series is about Sookie, surprise, surprise. Sookie is a waitress in a small town called Bon Temps in Louisiana, not too far from New Orleans. Sookie’s not your average waitress though, she can read minds! That’s not all, in this alternate universe, Vampires have recently “come out of the coffin”, as Sookie puts it. Now bare with me because I know just from reading that it doesn’t sound amazing

3.5/5

Ok, I know a 3.5 is not the greatest rating, but I love this book. If I rated it based on just my enjoyment, it'd get a 5. But I did factor in the actual quality, and based on that it's pretty "meh".

The writing is mediocre, sometimes cringey especially the dialogue. The plot is very straightforward and easy to follow. The characters are all one-dimensional (it is the first book, though, so maybe that'll change).

The men in this book though! All the main male characters are absolutely despicable! Bill, Sam, and Jason are so shitty towards Sookie.

Bill literally threatens Sookie with rape on their second date. They're making out in the car, Sookie bites his lip and Bill says to her, "If you do that anymore I'll have you whether you want to be had or not". What the fuck!!!

Sam is so pathetic and controlling. He never acted on his feelings for Sookie until Bill showed up. And now he's just acting on his jealousy.

Jason hits Sookie and yells at her to "get over" the fact that their uncle molested her as a child. In the show, I'm pretty sure Jason didn't know what their uncle did to her so I was more forgiving towards him there when he lashed out at her after their Gran died.

Most of the side male characters are pretty terrible too. But Terry seems nice. Lafayette has always been a favorite (but the first two books are a reread for me so I already know what happens in book two and I'm very sad about that). Eric is tolerable.

This book is not anything meaningful, or profound, or life changing. But is it a fun, wild ride? Hell yeah, it is!

TW: violence, gore, implied rape, implied incest, mention of child molestation
