I recognize this book was written in a different time period but I wasn't obsessed with the glamorization of law enforcement using violence unnecessarily (seemingly because the characters were Native American????).

One of my very favorites. This time around I listened to the audio version read by Donna Tartt. It’s exceptional and can be finished on a round trip from Ft. Smith to McAlister. . Tartt is so good—perfectly capturing the slight regional shifts in accent and diction among the characters—that the recording almost feels like act of self-mythology.

Truly a great American novel. This had the no‐nonsense sensibility and heart that makes the western such a compelling genre.
Mattie Ross is an icon. I wish she was my mom. I would flourish.

Oh man... this writing style was not for me. Small things seemed to go on for pages and I found myself bored. I had to force myself to finish this for my IRL book club, but would have DNFed otherwise.

I enjoyed this so much I would have turned it over and started again if Jimmy hasn't stolen it to read herself. I wish I'd read this book as a child when I was being traumatised by Steinbeck instead. Mattie is a force, a single-minded, practical, stubborn, occasionally accidentally comical force. The Coen Brothers film is a wonderfully faithful adaptation but despite knowing the plot the book still gripped me, largely because of Mattie's first person narration. Well worth reading. A new favourite.

Fantastic, fantastic novel. Any of you Hunger Games, Divergent, or Twilight fans want to read about a real teenage super-heroine, pick this up and give it a couple of chapters.
