If I hadn’t read [a:Hunter Frost|8260384|Hunter Frost|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1410922770p2/8260384.jpg]'s An Angel in Eyeliner, I might have given this story a pass. The photo and prompt that inspired this story are redolent of tranquility, rural charm, and tender feelings. I generally prefer relationship stories to feature troubled characters that have to work hard at finding love and happiness. It turns out that this was quite the perfect story for me. While it was sweet, romantic, and steamy, it never felt sugary.

Though Lane Stevens, retired professor, and Alex Hughes, his former student, have always harbored strong feelings for each other, it was a restrained thing that manifested itself as deep friendship and respect. After all, Lane is 17 years older than Alex, and that’s much too old, right? And Alex has such a bright future ahead of him that Lane would only hold him back.

Lane stuffs all those feelings under a hat and leaves friends behind to live a quiet life in the country. It may be an easy decision, but is it for the best?
