Skip pages 35-50. This isn’t horror - it’s gore/torture porn. That being said… a book has never made me so physically ill. It’s Willy Wonka meets Saw and it’s gnarly. This was like reading Goosebumps on the most extreme level. I’ve never read Splatterpunk before, but I will definitely be reading more!! The puzzles were great, the emotional attachment (and detachment) from the characters was super compelling, and somehow I was still smiling at the end. This is fucked up, but if you don’t mind gore then it’s an interesting ride.

“When horror isn’t quite horror anymore, it’s just normal. And when awful isn’t quite awful anymore, it’s just life.”

If i could give this -5 stars, i would.

The only horror in this book was the constant perverse sexual actions, thoughts, and otherwise.

Only made me laugh once and didn't like any of the main characters.

The writing was a lot of tell, and i honestly was bored by this book, and already i know.ill never pick up another book by him again.

Deleting this off of my phone now.

I’ve watched Evil Dead Rise and Saw X this year and loved them, so I thought, maybe I should give Playground a chance. This is my first venture into the genre of splatterpunk, which already sounds as bloody as it is, so I was already expecting a lot of visceral gore. And VISCERAL GORE, I GOT… but maybe I bit off more than I can chew.

I really enjoyed the book, mostly because it reads like a movie, with no dull moments to spare. Also, amazing characterization. You will really root for the kids/parents and despise the villains, in the best way possible.

The author described the horrors of the story in full details, sometimes bordering TMI territory. I don’t mind it being so gruesome, but some aspects of the story are just too much, I couldn’t help but squirm. Aside from the violence, there are a lot of taboo stuff going on, which ultimately led to the murderous events of the book. Trigger warning: name it. This book got it all. Hahaha.

It’s insane. It’s gross. It’s not for the faint-hearted. Consider yourselves warned.

My first read in the splatterpunk genre. Overall the story was decent, but the first 50 or so pages were gratuitous in their content and I felt not necessary? Seems to be the general idea of these books though.
