This book was pretty good, not as predictable as most thrillers. However, I saw a few things coming. I understand why she blamed herself, though it was her teacher's fault. I wish they'd gone a bit more into some of the other characters not just in the flashbacks. As multiple POVs would have been better. But overall a good thriller with an exploration of survivors' guilt and trauma.

If you're looking for a good locked-room mystery, this is for you. I loved the atmosphere of the beach house and the setting in the South, and there is just the right amount of creepiness and mystery. Also love how well Megan Miranda does the reverse chronological timeline!

THE GOOD: I didn't guess the twist.

THE BAD: I wanted more suspense and shock factor. The tension between the characters was frustrating to read because the reader can feel that none of them want to be there but feel like they have an obligation to be there for this annual reunion. The tension slowed the story down and dragged it out, which is probably the opposite effect of what it wanted to do.

🌟 REVIEW 🌟

#TheOnlySurvivors by @meganlmiranda

🌟 Rating: 4.5/5 🌟

This was the first thriller I’ve read in a while. It was a little slow to start as the scene was set and the characters were introduced, but once the pace picked up, I was hooked. I couldn’t put the book down. Megan Miranda really comes through with the twists up until the very end, and kept me guessing.

The chapters alternate between the “Then” and “Now”, with the “Then” chapters told from each of the 9 survivors perspectives in reverse chronological order, ending with the main character, Cassidy’s perspective. The “Now” chapters are told from Cassidy’s perspective. I do wish a bit more development of the other characters was done, as I think it would have tied some of the threads together better and been a bit easier to follow. Initially, I was looking back to remind myself of who each of the characters were.

I did like the concept of a group of high schoolers tied together through shared trauma, and a pact made together after the death of one of the survivors on the one year anniversary of the accident.

Overall, this book got me hooked on thrillers/mysteries, and I am looking forward to reading more of Megan Miranda’s books.

⚠️ Trigger Warnings: car accident, death, drug use/abuse, gun violence, stalking ⚠️

Initially I was very skeptical not so much about this novel but about my ability to keep this rather large cast of characters all straight in my head. Quickly their personalities presented themselves and they were all so well flushed out that they feel too entirely real to me to even consider confusing them in my mind. It was interesting to see how this group of kids, bonded from a traumatic experience they endured together, go on in separate paths but how the event still affects them all in different ways. The dual timelines kept the tension building and there was more than one twist that I didn't see coming. Superb summer thriller.

I’ve never really read this genre before, and I did enjoy it. While I didn’t necessarily predict the twists, they also didn’t really surprise me the way I was hoping.

Thank you to Megan Miranda, Simon & Schuster Canada, and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of The Only Survivors for me to read and review. What a wild story of trauma, loss, strength, and overcoming challenges. The time jumps between now and then to give us just a little bit more information about the tragic accident that they all "survived" was well done, especially how the past timeline worked backwards in time through the aftermath of the accident. There was a large number of characters to keep track of which I found difficult especially since a number of them didn't get a huge amount of detail provided about them/their personalities. It was a very slow burn to start, which I don't usually mind but this one was a bit too slow in my opinion and it took a very long time to get to anything exciting happening. There were quite a few twists and turns, some that I saw coming and some that I didn't. Overall the twists were definitely a success in this book, but I wish that it had been a bit faster paced to start.
