I find that I am really enjoying cozy fantasy! I feel like this book was a strange blend however of cozy/slice of life living as extremely high stakes with perilous scenarios. The author straddles the line of cozy and high fantasy and I kind of wish she had picked one or the other. I generally enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the magic system. I do feel like a bulk of the relationship was the two main characters having a similar disagreement over and over again and their resolutions got tiring to read. I am intrigued and excited to read more about this story and hope for more character growth and lore of this world.

I can only compare this book to Legends & Lattes for the theme of adventurers settling down to open a cozy shop. But where Legends & Lattes focused primarily on the development of the shop itself, this book tried to straddle that same relaxed energy and multiple life-threatening dangers, and - for me, personally - it didn't quite strike the right balance. There were several interesting plot points involving mystery and danger, and so when time was spent on the cozy shop and loving relationship I found myself getting bored and impatient, wanting more of a focus on the other plot lines.

(Mild)

The shop and its success was also established very quickly, so I wasn't at all invested in that aspect of the book for most of it.

Welcome to New Leaf Tomes & Tea! This cozy fantasy follows an evil queen’s bodyguard and a powerful head mage who run away together to a small town to open a tearoom and bookshop. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t *like* this book, but I didn’t *love* the combination of high stakes and easy resolutions or the flatly evil queen. Still, a pleasant and affirming read I’d recommend for anyone in the mood for a cozy fantasy!

I have some qualms with this book.

If it were a romance it skipped all the fun parts of the forbidden nature into the growing pains of the relationship where they move in together but don't really know each other that well because they've been sneaking away previously.  So, no pining, they're in love but not quite the fluffy happily ever after love.  One is the super powerful mage with a penchant for puns and is perpetually horny and loves reading (the brains) and the other is a palace guard who bakes and loves tea along with battle sense and quick analyzing skills (the brawn).  They are very much in a ride or die mindset and it's a bit repetitive until the cast of character is expanded to include neighbors/townsfolk and start to develop more of a found family.

The world building was... Both sparse and complex somehow.  Imagine some nuggets of lore just dropped and seeming like it means something but is never fully explained.  That is the majority of the book and while some of it can be figured out with context clues, there's still a lot of questions and I suppose I am used to a first book in a series spending adequate time establishing everything to reduce confusion through the remaining volumes.

As for plot, there were so many threads everywhere and only one was really tied up.  I presume more will be addressed in the future but it seemed like a lot of plot for a book that was vibe heavy.

Finishing this and all I can think is that it was fine.  The things I have issues with weren't particularly bad but I might hesitate to read more in the series.
