Spurred me to learn more about the actual historical event which inspired this story.

I'm not too into historical fiction, but this wasn't that bad. I had to read this for school, so I thought it was going to be totally boring and stuff, but it wasn't. There was different stories that weaved together, but it was easy to follow along. This book is amazing. You should definitely read this sometime in your life.

Poignant and striking. This book carries a punch with each word. Lester proves himself an incredible writer with this composite fiction story from America's days of slavery.

This book was written in dialogue like a play so it was very easy to read. The story is based on a day in history with a few of the characters representing actual people. The Day of Tears refers to the largest slave auction in history. March 2 and 3 1859 over 400 slaves were sold from Pierce Butler a Georgian plantation owner who had lost his fortune to gambling. The author goes between characters from present (the auction) to future (after the auction when characters are old). I can not even imagine this time and the amazing fact that despite how most white people were raised there were always those who knew this treatment of blacks was wrong. How that one simple act of kindness or risk could change a person's life forever.

excellent voices, story from differing perspectives. only one guy made slavery sound like a children's story--didn't like that.

Great research humanizing a little known historical event. Very harrowing at parts and at times hard to keep reading.
I thought the characters, both real and fictional were well developed, but wished there was a little more to the story. This book is told from many different viewpoints, which is a difficult format for any book, but especially one as short as this.
