The idea of this book is good, but it felt rushed. I’m not sure how to explain it best, but it was like the author wanted to get from point A to point B as fast as possible so everything needed to achieve the goal was glossed over. So when things were happening it was kind of just like “oh okay this is happening now”
I felt no emotional investment in any of the characters, and I’m not even sure what the main characters personality was like. Volatile, I guess. But there was no apparent rhyme or reason to her reactions.
I chose this book because after reading the Curse of the Gods series, I wanted to see more of Jane Washington because I found Trickery to be quite funny and I know from reading Jaymin Eves books that the humors wasn’t all hers. Apparently it’s not Washington’s either but oh well
It’s possible that because this is Washington’s much earlier work that it isn’t as polished as her more recent work and I’m willing to try another solo book from her

***REVIEW***
I really did love this book, I finished it over just a few days and having a 2yr old and a newborn (7 weeks) that says a lot!
I really got drawn in by the characters especially Bea, she has all the typical hang ups of a teenage girl but for all the opposite reasons. It flowed well, had some real unexpected twists & turns which left me angry, shocked, fist pumping the air and everything in between. The language was diverse and thankfully lacked repetition, I don’t know about you but I hate books that all read the same and the chapters are barely distinguishable from each other. I whole heartedly recommend this book, I’m ready with the second instalment as I type this.

This book did not capture my attention. It has an interesting world and races concept, but the story was neutral. There wasn't much character building and it felt like the main protagonist was stumbling through the story. I know many people enjoy the books. It just wasn't the type of story I really get into. I also did not enjoy the aggressive sexual desire towards the main character. I know that was supposed to be part of her species, but it felt too odd. I'm not sure how. As I said before it may just be my taste in books.

I’m screaming! I love this book for so many different reasons! The plot, the characters, the friendship, I just there are so many words! This book gives me a little of a mortal instrument vibe, which of course I love! It included so much of what I love in a book, magic, far, a love pentagon??? Queens, Kings, a fantastical academy! Hazen my heart, it’s so hard to put into words how I fell I love with you? I definitely want to do a book talk about this, I have so much to say about this book

Wow that was fast
Really good book
I only wish we didn't have a million love interests,. Otherwise, the development of Beatrice and the world is very interesting

You know when you're enjoying a YA fantasy novel and realise, 3/4 of the way through that you're not going to get a whole story because they're just setting up a trilogy and none of this will be resolved for literal years? There should word for that. Dissaplotment. Exhausposition. Narratisn't.
Publishers! One story per book. Three interlinking but essentially whole stories with major events resolved in each book in a trilogy. Knock it off with the 'If we drag it out we can make one plot stretch for three books' nonsense. ARGH.

Okay, so I got this book as a free ebook a while back and finally decided it was time to read it. It was so good! I was very pleasantly surprised!
I think what I loved most was the variety or people, species, and creatures that were contained in this story! I also loved how diverse the different types of magic were. The author, Jane Washington, does a really great job at world building and explanation. I definitely want to finish the series to see even more of this world!
As far as a favorite character, I'd have to say honestly the main character, Bea. Just her determination to never let what she's capable of change who she is as a person. I think that's beautiful.
There were a few grammatical errors here and there, but nothing that ruined the story. There was only the occasional curse word as well. However, I did want to warn that there is a potential trigger for rape victims.
The genre would fall under fantasy and young adult. Definitely an interesting and exciting read!
Moderate: Rape
Minor: Cursing

The progress of the characters sometimes didn't really make sense to me.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I bought it during the audible half price sale and I thought it was a RH book. That was my bad. I just assumed since Jane Washington has RH books that I have read and that's 100% my mistake. Besides that though.. the characters were half finished almost. I don't know how else to explain it. Just underdeveloped. I like the idea of the story though and I really liked the world.
There is one thing that put me off.. Something terrible happens to Beatrice. I won't say what because spoilers suck but I mean it's awful... But she is so focused on how it's affecting the people around her when she should be worried solely on herself. I don't like that she pushed her feelings aside so the people around her wouldn't be affected. I don't like that at all. I actually almost stopped reading the book, it bothered me that much. People deal with things differently and I understand that. I can see how maybe we were suppose to see her as a strong person because she was able to be like f*** you feelings and move on, but I feel like she cried for a couple days and then noticed how everyone else was feeling and then it was never mentioned again. I'm sorry but that shit is traumatic. Personal preference I guess.. It just bugged me.
I also don't like that I have no idea who the romantic interest is suppose to be.. I thought this book was RH until I read some reviews and now it's bothering me. I don't know who I am suppose to be rooting for! I read way too much RH. But in a one on one romance book, I would like to know who the heck the guy is.
I will read the next book because I want to know who she ends up with and I want to know what happens. But I am honestly not too excited about it.
