I have to admit that I bought A Devil and Her Love Song solely for its amazing cover artwork. The story itself sounded interesting to me as well: Maria Kawai (please tell me it’s a silly translation and not her actual name) is the female lead who is the new girl in a public school after being kicked out of a private school. There, she has problems connecting with the other students but soon finds herself in the middle of a love triangle – yeah, this last part is not the most interesting.

I loved Maria from the beginning because she’s so blunt, edgy, and really good at noticing the true intentions of people. She also realizes that she wants to love herself first and foremost. Sadly, the male characters want her to change and hide her true self, so that she’s more likable to others. We sadly didn’t see something about Maria’s life outside of school, I hope this will change in the upcoming volumes.

The art style of Tomori is interesting, to say the least. It’s definitely dated compared to more recent Shojo series. The faces of the characters look so weird, and the design of the male characters doesn’t look too great either.

But I still enjoyed this first volume much, mainly because of Maria. I’m curious to see where her journey will go.
