I’m actually hurt. There is no reason to why this book was so GOOD! I cannot explain…but alas I will.
Jennifer: her story breaks my heart because she always had the purist intentions and really only lived for everybody else. She wanted ONE thing and that was to be loved for who she was and not what she had to offer and goddamn if she never got it. Righteously, she took herself out before she could be further let down by actually every man ever.
Neely; you really had me in the first half girl…I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU. You love her until you hate her and that is exactly why she will never be happy. The juxtaposition between her and Hellen Lawson, OH GOD! (anyway I hate her forever)
Anne; my dear sweet Anne. The people’s princess. She knew what she wanted in life and didn’t stop until she got it. The only issue is, when she got it, it screwed her best friend and left her to turn to pills (dolls). A self made, well mannered, woman of all women. Helped her friends and the people she cared about with such fervor and yet she was always shafted in the end. (I will love you forever)
*Lyon Burke rot in hell.

The rise and fall of the American Dream has rarely been as perfectly portrayed as is shown in this book. I cried on a train over it and you would too.

2020: I DNFed this one, but I watched the movie and did a lot of reading about what went into the book and the movie during the time of its writing. I just couldn't reconcile the characters to the time and setting of the book and was confused the whole time I was reading. I was hoping it would be more Bell Jar-esque but I just don't know enough about the Hollywood scene during this time frame to get into it. I don't think this is the last time I'll give this book a try, but I'm ready to move on for now.

"but i don't love him, mama."
"no man can be loved."
poorly written, whack pacing, and confusing transitions but also has some of the best one-liners

unlikeable characters, yet compulsively readable- I see why this book has the cult following it has...

I wanted so much better for these women.
The book’s pace was all over the place and lingered on some scenes too long and skipped over years I would have loved to see. But I was intrigued and couldn’t wait to pick it again when I had to put it down.
