As a Childless-Not-By-Choice woman, this book was triggering for me, experienced as a punch to the gut over and over again. So many ancestors of this one little girl . . . many with failed lives of their own, redeemed in the “long view” as ancestors with DNA flowing forward and shaping the future of humanity. The one out & out villain here chooses not to become an ancestor, discontinuing a pregnancy. The whole book seems to be rhetorical in structure, arguing for life (as a choice). But the author misses something huge, which is that not everyone has a choice about whether or not to become a parent. The language here is beautiful and I enjoyed the book’s episodic structure. But content-wise I felt devastated. Overlooked. Negated. For anyone
struggling with infertility, or sensitive about the subject of human reproduction—maybe do yourself a kindness and give this one a pass.
