This is a book that is both ahead of a trend and as such possibly dated in retrospect. It is by no means a bad story. in fact, given your level of knowledge on Norse mythology, it might be a great introduction for you. It certainly has one element that hasn't aged beyond popularity. There's a jovial tonality that is always refreshing, entertaining, and increasingly popular in this type of subgenre. However in an age where myth retelling are exploding this doesn't bring a whole lot to the table other than it's Loki-favorable spin. Outside of some framing to make the tales more favorable rather that cynical to Loki and wit-isms, even with my base knowledge of the lore it didn't bring a whole lot I"d consider as new or engaging in itself. Not a terrible read, just not as engaging and immersive as I had hoped.

The idea of the book is fun, but it's unnecessarily cis, straight and misogynistic.
Moderate: Misogyny

It has a slow pace with some clever bits scattered throughout. The reader's voice was perfect for the role.

To me, reading Norse myths is never a waste of time. If they weren't powerful and meaningful, they wouldn't have survived. I loved reading Daulaire's retellings as a child; as an adult, I didn't find any improvement in Ms Harris' s, ostensibly from Loki's point of view and with modern language (whatever ...), any improvement. Modern (and ancient) audiences may well ask why Loki, befriended of Odin, chooses to become the agent of Asgard's downfall, but the only answers here are those you might get from an adolescent: I felt left out, they never accepted me, they were mean to me ... I'm sure there are more thoughtful retellings out there to inspire thought and wonder, but for now I've had enough. Ms Harris would have been better served by a reimagining; perhaps authors feel restrained by the original source material to tell the same stories in the same order, but does modem have to be 'dumbed-down'? Rather than enriching these tales, here they have just had some snark and glitter added.
