How do I feel about this book? It's hard to say. I have been waiting for Payton's book since the first time he was mentioned. So when I saw that this was his I was so freaking excited. And I wasn't exactly disappointed.. I just hated that this book centered around child abuse. I absolutely LOVED Kirstie. She was an amazing female. And I think she was perfect for Payton and she was incredible with those children. I am girl crushing on her just a bit.

Anyways.. overall I didn't totally enjoy the book because of what was going on with all the children but I did love the romance. So how do I rate it? Sigh 3.5 stars.

I liked the plot, the villain, and the romance; the story revolves around child abuse and the systemic ways in the medieval era that exploit children. This was mainly a plot-driven story, the romance mostly gets overthrown by the plot. But at least the plot and the villain is very strong.

-I didn't enjoy this one. too much pushy man determined to have the woman despite how many times she says no, uncaring of her reasons for saying no.

"go revel in one of your other women."
"dinnae want another one."
"weel, ye cannae have this one."
"aye, I can. I will. your nay was merely troublesome."

"mayhap the lass doesnae want ye. why dinnae ye leave her be?"
"I cannae."
"she is nay one of your women."
"I ken it."
"so if ye do get her into your bed, what will ye do afterward?"
"mayhap after I have rutted myself blind with her for a fortnight or two, I can once again start thinking like the sharp-witted fellow I always thought I was. see if it fades, if it is all just some brief madness." if she did not say aye soon, he knew that he would lose all patience. soon he would go to her room and ignore her nay until it became the aye he so craved.

-I just don't find that romantic at all, especially from the hero of the story.

child sex abuse as a theme for a historical romance was kinda surprising, but good plot development.sex scenes are lots erotic and sensuous.

Overall, a fun read!

This is one of those mindless romances that I read and then think "Why did I keep reading it?" It isn't bad, it's just that Howell writes the same story over and over with different names and barely different situations. And yet...I keep reading them. It's like a weird compulsion. :P I know the heavy brogue in the dialogues bother some people but I don't mind it. :P This one was better than some of the others and I liked the characters, so I suppose I'd recommend it if you're in need of a mindless Scottish romance.
