This book is part of the LYRC '21-'22 list for grades 3-5. The cover and the title immediately told me this is likely to be a tear-jerker... my favorites. What I did not know from the cover is that this book is a step above. No spoilers, but this book is a roller coaster ride of emotion that left me tear-stained reading in my darkened office so no one could see me ugly cry. The way this book sheds light on homelessness for every age group and the different causes and difficulties associated with it is truly beautiful. Pyron takes on a difficult topic and makes it an enthralling story for children and for me as an adult. Not only does this story reflect homelessness in a relatable and passionate way, but also breathes life into those who suffer from it and are so often overlooked and branded due to assumptions about who they are and why they are in the situation they are in. I normally do not write out full reviews because I read so many children's books as a children's librarian, but this book deserves every single word of praise and more.

A heartwarming story about a girl and the dog and woman she works so hard to help. Along the way, Piper learns what home and family really mean. The book is told in two perspectives, that of Piper and the dog, Baby.

This is a sweet story told in various perspectives of serving and helping others even when you don’t have a lot for yourself. When Piper’s world changes because of family struggles she meets new friends and they rally to support an elderly lady and her dog. The book teaches readers to see with their hearts and not just their eyes when they encounter people who are different from them. It was a great read and gives great lessons about life for young readers.

This was a really good book! I was somewhat disappointed at the beginning. It's a story told through the eyes of a young girl and a dog. The first few chapters from the girl's point of view sounded a little too old for her voice. That's why I went with 4 stars (although, I'd really say 4 1/2). That settled out pretty quickly. The chapters in the dog's point of view were in poetry format. So cute! The story speaks of homelessness and mental illness, but it's handled very well. It is a book suited for mid to upper elementary students. It would be a great read for a class. In fact, I'll be making a lesson for it for the 6th grade library time. I think they'll love it!

I had a feeling this book was setting me up for heartbreak, and I just don't want to do that to myself right now. DNF.

I’m not the biggest fan of books about animals. This one was good, just not my favorite.

I would have given this one 5 stars if not for the horrific fear I had reading it that the dog dies (he doesn’t). This was a great book about homelessness that showed a lot of truths that our young children need to know and learn about. I liked the diverse characters and the message about kindness. Good pick, Texas Bluebonnet committee.

Tugging at my heartstrings! It's such a good and cute book! Everyone needs to read this book in their lifetime! Baby, Jewels, and Piper's relationship with each other is so sweet. Piper is the main character and finally, the main character is not annoying!! Just go read this book, please!!
