A naturalistic work by Strindberg, a play about a man and a woman, a servant and an aristocrat, the clash of sexes and the clash of classes- which one comes out on top?
Though Julie and Jean are fascinating to read about, with multiple different motivations and insecurities, faults and triumphs, the play does fall short in some instances (as viewed with the eyes of a 21st century woman). Admittedly, it describes the struggle of the time it was written, when Darwinism had first erupted, society’s classes were questioned, and women’s Suffrage had come forth. And while all those elements make it very interesting to read about, when viewed as a product of its time, nowadays it reads as greatly misogynistic.
I would still recommend reading it though, as - unfortunately- it’s as relevant as ever and extremely well-written.

Very modern in terms of how short lived a love affair between high-on-harmones youngsters was.
