“All Eli had to do was smile. All Victor had to do was lie. Both proved frighteningly effective.”

Words cannot describe how good this book was, but I’m going to try anyway.
I love friends turned enemies with a hint of homoerotic energy. The way the book started was so interesting, I wasn’t lost at all, I was intrigued. All the characters in this book were morally grey, I don’t hate any but I can’t approve of their actions if you get what I mean. All the characters were thoroughly explored and written as major parts of the story, not one was less than the other. It’s a story about two college scientists discovering there’s more than what the rules of nature allow and deal with it in their own way. One turns to religion, a saviour and a reason, the other turns to revenge, betrayed by his best friend. I really loved the “good guys” gang, aka Victor, Sydney, Mitch and Dol, because they are such a found family. I’m hoping to read the sequel very soon because I NEED MOREE

Oh man, this was excellent. I started it ages back but knew after only a few chapters that I wanted to save it until I could properly savor it and that was so the right call. I fell so much in love with every character so to have the ending shake out that way was beyond satisfying!

3.5 ⭐️ Wow, this book is dark but pretty good. It reads like secret real life in the 2000s? What starts out as dark academia with a sci-fi twist quickly evolves into a post prison, manhunt of bad versus evil. Always competing best Bros want to know if EO’s exist and how to make them. They figure out that when you have a near death experience there is a high chance some supernatural ability will be born out of that, so they both try assisted suicide in pursuit of becoming supernatural and succeed, but create (im)mortal enemies out of each other.

After “getting out” a prison, Victor is on the hunt for revenge. Meanwhile, Eli has been on a vigilante trip with the help of an evil mind bending mistress. With childhood trauma of having an abusive pastor of a father, Eli has seen his reincarnation as a gift from God, and it is his God bound duty to eliminate these sinful and wrong creatures that walk the earth with extra ordinary powers, after their own, typically accidental near death experience. He knows, and believes that something is missing from these people that was lost in brief death, and that it has been replaced with some dark and Satanic And that him being an EO is fine, but nobody else can be, and that each murder has been blessed and approved by God.

I thought this was a really unique story with a really interesting messages along the lines of Pius indignation, loss, revenge, betrayal, lust and human justification.

Oh Sydney

It started off great, but the ending felt a little anticlimactic(?) — on the side of it was easy to tell what was going to happen. And while I did find the characters very intriguing, I couldn’t connect with the main ones (and is it me or did the addition of Serena sort of took power away from Eli). I really liked where the story was going though, and especially the way it was told (I felt like completing a puzzle but I wasn’t confused so it was great). I had an enjoyable time, but it didn’t quite break my brain the way I wished it did.
