I picked this up because [a:Michael Chabon|2715|Michael Chabon|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1515875672p2/2715.jpg] waxed rhapsodically about the short story " 'Oh, Whistle, And I'll Come To You, My Lad' " in his collection of essays [b:Maps and Legends: Reading and Writing Along the Borderlands|1844499|Maps and Legends Reading and Writing Along the Borderlands|Michael Chabon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1328694310s/1844499.jpg|2905134]. I wasn't that taken by the story, but I found M. R. James's work to be an intriguing look at 19th century horror. A few takeaways:
1) Almost every story starts with a researcher, an academic, a professor, etc... looking into something that best not be looked upon. Often, the start of the research is benign enough (with one protagonist working on a travel guide of the Danish Isles!), but eventually something nasty appears. Nothing is ever as dark and foreboding as reading the Necronomicon, and I think the stories work better as a result --- you often ease into the horror slowly.
2) The pacing is absolutely not what I expect from current horror. The stories are often quite short, with little time spent between the the climax and the denouement. Indeed, you are often left unsure of what did actually happen. There's not the current obsession of detailing the origin of every monster out there. James just wants you to read about the monster (with the researcher), see the monster briefly, get a very small dose of resolution, and then finish.
Of the stories included, I most enjoyed "Lost Hearts" (with a fine sense of supernatural justice) and "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas" (the longest piece, detailing greed, code-breaking, and a quite spooky antagonist).

I thought this graphic novel was okay. The stories are definitely creepy and most of the illustrations are well done, but I had a hard time really connecting. I basically skipped one of the stories completely because it was very boring.

Genuinely creepy and enjoyable. I like that you can still sense James' influence in contemporary horror - so many of these stories pivot around something unseen/just out of sight following the narrator, which reminded me of modern horror like It Follows. Really simple concepts which are still so effective now! I suppose some ideas will always be scary no matter how much time passes.

If you can, listen to A Podcast to the Curious in between chapters. They provide color commentary, historical details, and analysis. It made reading this a lot of fun.

Unlike the first Ghosts of an Antiquary, some of these stories genuinely spooked me, while still retained th sense of fun and a bit of sly humour besides. There’s a tone of James having such joy with references and wordplay that were beyond my awareness, so some of the reading of what should be cozy neat tales led me to a bit of research and slowed the progress a bit, but other than that quite fun to read and get lightly spooky!

Even when reading this book for the second time the stories are good. Most of the time the ghosts or supernatural beings are not described in any detail or not at all because they stay unseen. Often this is more effective than describing every detail of horror and gore as is often the case with modern ghost/horror stories.
At times the language is old fashioned and often more so because the narrator quotes even older texts.
Personally, I didn't find the stories scary, but I'm not easily scared.

The first two stories were meh, the third story was my favorite my far, and the last story was really great as well.

The ghosts, or at least their reveals, are often not very scary. James excels at the verisimilitude (especially via his detached, academic narrators), at setting a stage that seems quite real. He is less skilled at making the ghosts seem real, or, as I said frightening. Of all the stories here, I liked "The Mezzotint" the most for a clever approach to revealing the story, and an effective mood.

İngiliz edebiyatı dışında bütün dünya için önemli bir korku yazarı ve benim de favorilerimden Lovecraft'ı bile etkileyen türde bir yazar James. Kitap benim için mükemmeldi diyemem fakat genel olarak hoşuma gitti. Bir çok yazarı etkilemiş ve hikayelerinin bir çoğu da filmlere ve başka hikayelere yön vermiş birisi olduğu için saygı duymak gerek. Ayrıca ara ara koyulan görseller de güzeldi. Uzatmadan, çok spoiler vermeden her öyküden ve benim düşüncelerimden kısaca bahsedeceğim.
1-Islığı Çalarsan Gelirim Yanına, Arkadaş
Başlığını bir Robert Burns şiirinden alan ve benim kitapta en beğendiğim öykülerden birisiydi. Hikaye Parkins adlı bir adamın eski bir düdük bulması ve bundan sonra başına gelen paranormal olaylar üzerinden gidiyor. Oldukça başarılıydı ve gerçekten geriliyorsunuz okurken. Sonu biraz hayal kırıklığına uğrattı sadece. 4/5.

Bir otelin 12 numaralı odasında kalan adamın başına gelen olaylardan bahsediyor. 13 numaranın lanetli olması gibi bir ana düşüncesi var. Kısa ama genel olarak hoştu. 3/5.
3-Runik Lanetler
Karswell adlı gizemli bir adamın eserlerini inceleyen Dunning ve onu belaya süren bir lanet üzerinden geçiyor. Kısaydı ve fena değildi. 2/5.
4-Yitik Kalpler
Ölümsüzlüğü arayan kuzeni Abney'nin yanına kalmaya giden genç Stephen Elliott'ın hikayesini anlatan oldukça güzel bir öyküydü. 3.5/5.
5-Dişbudak Ağacı
Gerçekten gizemli ve gerilim uyandıran bir öykü. 17. yy sonunda cadı olduğuna inanılıp öldürülen Bayan Mothersole ve onun ölümünden sonra gerçekleşen doğa üstü olaylar üzerinden geçiyor. Bu da kitapta en çok sevdiğim öykülerden oldu. 4/5.
6-Rahip Alberic'in Kitabı
İngiliz bir turistin Fransa'da Rahip Alberic'in eski kitabını bulması ve kitabın arkasındaki Süleyman ve bir iblisin resmini görmesi ile alakalı diyebilirim. Çok bir olay olmuyor fakat resim önemli yer taşıyor. Fena değildi genel olarak. 2/5.

Küçük bir handa konaklayan Thomson ve kilitli odalardan birisinde değişik bir varlıkla karşılaşmasını anlatıyor. Güzel bir atmosfer yarattığı için beğendim. 3/5.
8-Katedral Tarihinden Bir Vaka
Bir vampir öyküsü olarak da kabul ediliyor. Southminster Katedrali yenilenirken bir mezar bulunuyor ve insanlar ölmeye başlıyor. Betimlemeler güzeldi. Genel olarak güzeldi diyebilirim. 2.5/5.

M. R. James'in de zaman geçirdiği Eton Kolejinde anlatıcının bir baykuş ile geçen konuşmasını anlatıyor. Oldukça kısaydı ve genel olarak eehh işte diyebileceğim bir türden hikayeydi. Yarım kalmış bir karalama tadındaydı o yüzden diyecek çok şeyim yok. 1.5/5.
