There was a little magic inside this book and I really loved the back and forth between time periods. The love stories and mystery in the book drew me in completely, I HAD to know how it all turned out. The fact that it was set in NOLA was perfect for the bit of fantasy that ran through the book.

Love, magic, history, life.

The most beautiful entwining parallels I've had the pleasure of reading about.

This book made me feel so many things, made me realize very important truths while also painting a picture of a time of great sorrow and struggle.

As a European myself, I have little knowledge of how life was during the Civil War and how unfair the whole situation was. What monstrosities were happening. I'm glad to have learned a little bit about this piece of history and I'm so grateful that I could see it through the eyes of not two, but four wonderful and selfless people.

I've learned something new while also re-reading my all time favorite tale as old as time.

I'm closing this paper window for now and putting it on my shelf.

Can't wait for you all to go open it and see it for yourselves too.

It wasn't bad. It just had a lot of potential and didn't quite make it.

I usually DNF books I'm sorely not enjoying, like something is annoying me or pissing me off, but this one is a DNF because I just couldn't get into it.

The pacing was really bad for me, so slow and uninteresting. I get the feeling that this sort of pacing would be others' total jam, but I prefer it when things move along at a fast clip, new info popping up all the time and things breezing along and, even if the pacing isn't so fast, then I like my character studies to be deep and impactful.

This was just not my particular cup of tea. Hopefully it will be yours instead though!

Two love stories. Past and present. interracial couple. forbidden love. tortured hero. and beautiful writing and storytelling style. what not to love 😍
I have to say it was awkward and a tiny bit creepy at times. and I didn't like the present time heroin very much. She was too nice 🙄
But I loved the different issues it dealt with
